2024 Color of the Year – Blue Nova

While the inspiration for Benjamin Moore’s 2024 Color of the Year stems from the night sky and the emergence of a newly formed star, Blue Nova has us seeing the boundless beauty of the sea. This stunning shade effortlessly captures the vastness and depth of the open ocean hues and has us wanting to infuse it into our own homes.

Blue Nova is an evocative mid-tone is a mesmerizing blend of blue and violet that can bring ripples of intrigue and modern coastal vibes into your home. The true beauty of this inspired tone is its versatility, so if you’re looking for ways to bring this otherworldly shade into your home, we’ve got the go-to guide for you. Read on for a few ways to integrate Blue Nova into your coastal home decor.

Make a Statement

If bold is your vibe, you’ll be happy to hear that Blue Nova shines as a statement color in any space and is perfect if you’re looking to make a splash! We love how Hana’s Happy Home did just that when she elevated this sun-drenched guest bedroom a Blue Nova feature headwall.

We recommend White Dove as a contrasting shade – it’s an lowkey white with subtle warm undertones to perfectly balance the cool base of Blue Nova. It also happens to star alongside Blue Nova in Bejamin Moore’s 2024 Color Trends Palette – a win in our book!

For bedding, we love Boll and Branch’s Signature Hemmed Duvet Set paired with some sea-life inspired accents like Williams Sonoma’s Graphic Seaside Pillows. These pillows bring in the perfect complementary shades and bring a fun pattern to your bedding. Add in a little texture and warmth with some Natural Seagrass bedside lamps and some Champagne Capiz Shell Artwork and you’ve got a well rounded space!

Get Inspired by Fashion

Design and fashion are nearly synonymous with one another, with each inspiring and pushing the other into greatness. We love a fashion-inspired approach to integrating Blue Nova through color blocking. This can work great in rooms of any size because you control the proportions of color. Pair it with a crisp white and a coral or yellow tones for heightened contrast and impact.

The key to color blocking is a strict division between tones and limiting patterns – keep those colors primarily solid. A natural drift-wood toned trim is perfect to create that crisp line along the wall. We love the Horizons collection from West Elm, for art with its organic color blocking vibe. For your shelves, try some nautical inspired color-blocked books, a textural vase, or metallic decorative objects.

Elevate the Details

If you’re looking for something a little more subtle, Blue Nova’s got you. It may be bold enough to color an entire room, but it also delights as a part of the details. MacKenzie and Co executed this perfectly in this Mashpee, MA home, where the feature blue graces the upholstered window bench.

What we love about this approach is how endless the options are now that digital textiles are in the spotlight.  We at Saltsy have a few we love that can incorporate pattern, color, and texture into your home.

This blank blank blank pattern is perfect for pillow accents. To really elevate the look, find some solid-colored accent pillows or blankets to pair with it.

Bonus Idea: Make a Signature Space

With paint and a good imagination, it doesn’t take much to make a space feel new again. If you’re feeling particularly inspired, take a hint from Will Taylor at Bright / Bazaar and use Blue Nova to add a pop of color in your modern kitchen to make it a signature space.

What works particularly well here is the high contrast white shiplap (added texture!) and the way Taylor used a soft, tonal backsplash that perfectly accents the feature blue with crisp white counters. Bring in some metallic accents through your lighting and cabinet hardware to make it all pop!

Most of all, don’t be afraid to experiment! With a little creativity, you can elevate your home into a coastal haven where Blue Nova whispers stories of the ocean and beckons you to dive into its endless beauty.
